ADDISON, Ala. – Addison traveled 10 miles south and took on the Meek Tigers for two games Friday night. The 10th ranked Addison Ladies came away with a 72-47 victory while Meek’s fourth ranked men’s team took a 58-48 win.

The Addison Ladies, ranked 10th in this week’s 1A state poll, played a scrappy but over matched Meek Lady Tiger team and came away with a fairly easy 72-47 victory. The first period opened with the Lady Tigers jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead with Addisyn Williams putting in four points. Addison’s opening period energy didn’t match the Lady Tigers as the Lady Bulldogs had some lazy passes and just kind of slept walked through the opening three minutes of the game. Addison then went on a 12-0 run to take the lead and they would never trail again. Addison outscored the Lady Tigers by a 15-2 score as they took the period 15-7. Addison’s Gracie “Bug” Manley led the Dawgs with seven points while “Magic” Molly Gilbreath had six of her own.

The second period had Addison winning 20-10 and the game was never in doubt. Addison’s Lydia “Barbie” Ergle and Manley each put in six points. Hadley “Shooter” Butler had four steals in the period giving her six for the half. There may be a theft warrant for Miss Butler’s arrest in Arley since she stole so many basketballs on this night. She wasn’t through either. Meek’s Laney Phillips had four points and two rebounds to try and keep the hometown Lady Tigers in the ballgame. Addison took a 35-17 halftime lead.

The second half started off with both teams playing pretty good basketball. Meek started shooting better and Addison got several easy transition buckets after Butler steals. Addison won the period 24-15 to go into the fourth period with a comfortable 59-32 lead. Manley, Gilbreath, Brilyn Dover and “Little” Gracie Roberts each had 6 points. Butler had five assists and two more steals in the frame. Meek’s Aleah Addison had 6 while, Addisyn Williams put in four.

The fourth period was actually taken by the Lady Tigers. They nailed a couple threes and actually played better defensively. Meek won the period 15-13 but lost the game, 72-47. Meek’s Aleah Addison had eight big points, to include two three-pointers, while Peyton Johnson had four points and three boards. Addison was led by Manley with six and Anna Grace Atkins hit a deep corner three for her only bucket of the evening.

Addison’s win put them to 3-0 in county and 6-3 overall. Addison will travel to Sumiton Christian for a Monday night tilt.

Meek 58 – Addison 48 (Varsity Boys)

The Addison men went into Meek to take on the fourth-ranked tigers and they left without the win, and all scratched up. Meek came away with a 58-48 victory in which the difference in the game was rebounding. Meek outrebounded Addison 41-23 on the night.

The first period was a back and forth affair.  Both teams were pressing and causing turnovers, both forced and unforced. Meek was ahead 12-11 with just seconds to go in the period, when Addison’s Brady Gilbreath nailed a last second half court bomb for three points. Gilbreath had eight points in the period. Jed “Wizard” Wilkins had four points for the Dawgs. Meek was led by Ory Firth and Jarrett Benson who tallied six points each. Addison actually outrebounded Meek 8-3 in the period. It would be the last period where the Dawgs were even close to the Tigers on the boards as Meek outrebounded Addison 38-15 in the final three periods. At the end of the first, Addison led 14-12.

The second period was as about as bad a scoring period that Addison has had all year. Meek had a lot to do with that, but Addison went long stretches where they missed layups and the rim. Addison was outmuscled under the boards as Braylen Roberts, Benson and Dylan Dunagan dominated the glass for the Tigers. Addison was outscored 17-6 with Lane “Duct Tape” Tubb scoring three of the six Addison points. Meek’s Benson looked like Larry Bird on the court tonight as he shot the ball very well and he moves particularly well for a thicker ball player. Benson put in nine points to go along with three boards. Roberts had four points and two boards. Meek took a 29-20 lead into the half.

The second half had both teams starting slow as no one scored for almost the first two- and one-half minutes of the third period. Addison’s defense wasn’t the problem as they played pretty well until the ball was shot and then it was just rebound after rebound for the Tigers. Meek had numerous second chance points and won the period 15-9. Addison’s Gilbreath tried to keep them close, and he did. Gilbreath, who has Steph Curry range, put in 7 of the Dawgs 9 points. Tiger Ethan Barton had four points and Benson had six. Meek had stretched their lead to 44-29 with only one period to go.

The final frame began with Gilbreath hitting several driving shots and Meek’s Roberts dominating on the inside. The lane belonged to the Tigers tonight and it was Roberts just out jumping and out positioning the Bulldog big men all night long. Addison was able to shave 5 points off the lead as they took the fourth, 19-14 but lost the game 58-48. Gilbreath put in 12 in the fourth while Briley “Snake” Hayes hit a trey. Meek’s Braylen “The Beast” Roberts had 9 points. Benson had four more points and Barton surprisingly took four rebounds, he’s a point guard.

Addison drops to 2-1 in county and will travel to Sumiton Christian Monday night for an area matchup.
