PREP BASKETBALL: Addison Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs handle Lynn at home

ADDISON, Ala. — Addison hosted the Lynn Bears for a pair of varsity matchups, and it was a good night for the home teams. The Addison Ladies cruised to a 61-27 victory while the men took a 74-48 win.

Addison 61 – Lynn 27 (Varsity Girls)

The Addison Lady Bulldogs hosted the Lady Bears from Lynn, and it wasn’t pretty. Lynn only had six players on their team and the talent gap was as deep as the Grand Canyon. The girls from Lynn never gave up and played very hard but this night belonged to the Lady Dawgs. Addison jumped out to huge lead and Lynn could only muster two total shots in the first four minutes of the ball game. The full court press and the Lady-to-Lady defense stymied the Lady Bears in the period and the game. Addison outscored Lynn 20-2 in the period. Addison was led by “Magic” Molly Gilbreath who literally could not miss on this night. Gilbreath had 11 points in the period to go along with six rebounds. Gracie “Bug” Manley had five points.

The second period didn’t get any easier for the Lady Bears as they were outscored 23-6 as Addison took a commanding 43-8 lead at the half. Gilbreath continued her hot pace as she totaled 13 more points. Gilbreath hit five three-pointers in the first half. Manley kicked in another five points in the second.

The second half saw the Addison starters pretty much sit the bench after about the five-minute mark of the third period. Addison won the third period 14-9 to lead 57-17 going into the fourth frame. Addison’s Hadley “Shooter” Butler had five points while Gilbreath hit her sixth three-pointer.

The fourth saw the Lady Bears actually win the period 10-4 to make the final score 61-27. Addison’s Katie Barrett and Lauryn “Beemer” Cuningham each put in a bucket for the Lady Dawgs.

All in all, it was a good game for the Addison Lady Bulldogs as their entire team got to play some quality minutes and they picked up another county victory. Addison moves to 2-0 in county with the win. Addison travels to play Saint Bernard for a region matchup Tuesday night.

Addison was led in scoring by Gilbreath who had 28 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Manley had 12 points, seven boards, two assists, four steals and a block. Butler had eight points, three boards, nine assists and six steals. Barrett had six points, four boards and a steal. Cunningham had four points, four rebounds, a steal and two blocks. Lydia “Barbie” Ergle had two points, three boards and two steals. Gracie Roberts had two points and an assist. Brilyn Dover had two boards and a steal. Reese Osborne had five boards. Anna Grace Atkins had a rebound.

Addison 74 – Lynn 48 (Varsity Boys)

The Addison men got off to a huge start against the men from Lynn by outscoring them 28-5 in the opening period. Jed “Wizard” Wilkins had his best night of the year as he started off with eight points and four rebounds. Wilkins was extremely aggressive offensively on this night. Bradley “Big Foot” Willette had eight points as well. Lynn could muster only one basket in the period.

The second got a little better for the visitors but if it were not for the free throw line in the first half Lynn would have had a grand total of 12 points in the entire half. Addison took the period 22-19 to go into the half with a solid 50-24 lead. Brady Gilbreath led the Dawgs with 12 points in the period. Josh “West Coast” Netherton and Wilkins each chipped in five more points apiece.   

The Addison men, just like the ladies’ game before, got to play their entire team on this night. The second half had the Lynn Bears outscoring Addison 15-14 as the boys from Lynn got hot from behind the arc. Addison’s Lane “Duct Tape” Tubb had 5 points while Wilkins put in another four points.

The fourth period had Addison winning the period 10-9 and the game 74-48. Gilbreath led with four points while Jacob “Lanky” McLamb had two points but had three rebounds and a blocked shot.

The win moved Addison to 2-0 in county play as well. The boys will also play Saint Bernard Tuesday night.

Gilbreath led the way with 18 points, nine rebounds, two assists and three steals. Wilkins had 17 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and two steals. Tubb had 11 points, a board and a steal. Willette had 10 points, six boards, two assists and a steal. Netherton had seven points, four boards and an assist. McLamb had five points, four boards and a block.  Briley “Snake” Hayes had three points two boards, three assists, a steal and a block. Peyton “Rudi” Holland had two boards and a steal.  Hayden Holland had a board and an assist.
