CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City School Board on Tuesday named Cheryl Harrison board president and Joey Orr board vice president.

Harrison, elected to the board of education in 2020, said she is “ready to hit the ground running” for the advancement of the city schools.

Orr has served on the board since 2016 and shared, “I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve our students and faculty as we carry out the mission of helping our schools reach their highest potential.”

The board recognized the best of the best at West Elementary, selecting its Student of the Month, Teacher of the Month and Support Staff Member of the Month from the abundance of worthy candidates at the Rosemont Avenue school.

Fourth-grader German Ventura was named Student of the Month. His dedication and excellent attitude while learning English were noted. School Nurse Dori Porter was named Support Staff Member of the Month for her compassion and diligence when caring for the school’s students. Lastly, Alabama Reading Initiative Coach Lindsay Harris was named Teacher of the Month.

Whorton Engineering provided an update on West’s extensive HVAC project. While almost 30 new dehumidifiers are operational and more are being installed, the outside HVAC units are on backorder until approximately March 2023. Many of the project’s goals are already being met with humidity and odor issues in the classrooms being resolved with the permanent dehumidifiers opposed to the noisy, portable ones which were being used.
