CULLMAN, Ala. – Giving visitors a glimpse into 1930s and 40s farm life, Peinhardt Living History Farm opened its gates Saturday and Sunday for its annual Farm Day event – this year spread over two days instead of one – for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 40-acre farm was brimming with activities authentic to the day-to-day farm life of the Peinhardt family in Depression-era Cullman.
Little ones painted pumpkins, visited animals, took rides on horse-drawn wagons and tasted fresh apple cider and sorghum syrup. Live music, various crafts and sweet potato and corn harvesting, along with grist mill and sawmill demonstrations, were spread across the farm. Barns full of antiques ranging from historic farm equipment to handcrafted wares were open to the public.
As he walked through the antique-filled museums, Cullman’s Edgar Veigl mused, “It’s funny that many people who see this equipment have never seen them before. For me, I remember using some of this equipment when I was growing up.”
The farm welcomed almost 2,000 visitors on Saturday and almost as many on Sunday. Famous Steele Orchard fried pies were available for purchase along with honey, sorghum syrup, soaps, pumpkins and other vegetables, leatherworks, Brickyard Meats beef jerky and peacock feathers from the farm’s peacock population, which can often be seen and heard from the North Alabama Agriplex a short distance away.
New to the Cullman community, Mike McKelvey noted as he walked through the exhibits, “I’ve visited a lot of farm events and festivals like this but never one like this. It’s thorough and educational. It’s apparent that much time and thought were put into this event, and it’s appreciated. This is cool stuff!”
Displayed prominently at the North Alabama Agriplex were wares from the Heartland Quilters Guild, an organization formed over 20 years ago with 25 active members. The Guild promotes and educates on the art form of quilt making while participating in several community service projects and events. The Guild meets on the second Thursday evening of each month at 6:30. Meetings, held at Christ Covenant Church in Cullman, are open to quilters of all levels, from beginners to experts. Interested quilters are encouraged to attend with projects and questions.
