WEST POINT, Ala. – The East Limestone Indians came into West Point looking for a win Friday night and despite the Warriors building an early lead, East Limestone was able to pull away in the final frame to defeat West Point 35-20.
East Limestone received the opening kickoff only to have the ball bounce off the receiver’s chest and West Point’s Aidan Maddox recovered the ball at the Indian’s 26. Starting with good field position, quarterback Hunter Hensley moved the Warriors down to the 6 where he called his own number and ran around right end for the score. On the extra point attempt, the Indians were caught in the neutral zone and the ball was placed at half the distance to the goal, so the Warriors decided to go for two and took an 8-0 lead with 9:24 remaining in the first quarter.
The Indians tried to get their offense going but the Warrior defense forced a three and out. East Limestone punted the ball on fourth down to the Warriors’ Brody Freeman, who ran it all the way back to the house for another West Point touchdown to make it a 14-0 game with 6:56 left to play in the first quarter.
Both teams struggled to move the ball in the second quarter, but the Indians big play maker Alex Mason finally got it going for East Limestone. On second down at the Warrior 47-yard line, Quarterback Jake Cochran found Mason at the West Point 13-yard line. On first down, Cochran moved the ball on down to the West Point 4 before calling his own number again and putting the Indians on the scoreboard. The PAT was good, and the Indians trailed 14-7 at the 8:14 mark of the second quarter.
Following a West Point fumble, Mason broke free for a 20-yard Indians touchdown and after the PAT, the game was all tied up at 14.
Following a Warrior punt, the Indians fumbled with 1:59 left in the second and Riley Aldridge recovered the ball for the Warriors. At the end of two quarters the game remained tied 14-14.
West Point received the second half kickoff and drove almost the length of the field before Garit Roberson plunged in from the 1-yard line. The PAT was no good and West Point retook a 20-14 lead over East Limestone.
The third quarter was coming to a close when Mason had his longest run of the night for the Indians. Cochran faked going left while handing the ball off the Mason and he took it 70 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was good and East Limestone pulled ahead 21-20 with 1:31 left in the third.
Mason and the Indians added two more touchdowns in the fourth to pull away from the Warriors and West Point ended up falling to East Limestone 35-20.
West Point falls to 3-6 with the loss and will finish up its regular season at Brewer next week.
