CULLMAN, Ala. – Kathryn Neese, owner of Scooter’s Coffee in Cullman, has found a way for her business to give back to local causes with monthly Days of Giving in which a percentage of the days’ sales are donated to a worthy cause. This month, on Monday, Oct. 17, 20% of all sales will be donated to the family of Vinemont High School’s Walker Smithson, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.
Said Neese, “Being locally owned and operated, we see the needs of organizations and individuals in our community and want to come together to help them. When we heard about Walker Smithson’s story, we knew we wanted to put together a Day of Giving for him and his family to show our support for them in his fight.”
Neese has been in contact with Smithson’s mom over the last few weeks. “When I first reached out to her, she told me that Walker’s favorite coffee place is Scooter’s! I am hopeful that he will be able to come by to see us on a day he is feeling good.”
Wendy Smithson’s recent post on the Walkerstrong Facebook page reads:
“Update: We got a phone call from the oncologist this morning. Unfortunately, the bone marrow biopsy shows Walker still has cancer cells and is not in remission as they/we had hoped for. They said, ‘this doesn’t happen often, but it does sometimes.’ He was scheduled to start the aggressive chemo on Monday, but they want him to come on in this Thursday to start treatment. He will receive aggressive/harsh treatment for 8 weeks straight, then they will do another bone marrow biopsy. If he is still not in remission, they will change his “roadmap” and start looking at some other options.”
Neese invites everyone to come by on the 17th to show support for Walker Smithson. Scooter’s Coffee is located at 724 Second Ave. NW in Cullman.
Previous Days of Giving have benefited the Cullman VFW, Curt’s Closet, Cullman Caring for Kids and East Elementary School.
