CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman City Schools will host a Digital Awareness Seminar for city school district parents, students and community members on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The free event will be held at the Cullman High School auditorium from 6-7:30 p.m.

The seminar aims to help educate parents about their children’s social media and digital activities and how to keep these activities safe for their children. Parents will be taught appropriate uses of technology and frequently used social media sites and cell phone apps used by teenagers and even younger children.

“We’ve all experienced a shift in how today’s students communicate strictly through technology, both on campus and in their personal lives,” Cullman City Schools Technology Coordinator Michael Fowlkes said. “Let’s just be honest; our kids know way more about apps and social media platforms at a faster pace than we do as parents, and they will be the first to tell us that. So, our leadership team developed this idea to educate our parents to be more digitally aware of the platforms that our students are using on a daily basis.”

In a press release, the city school district said, “October is recognized as National Parenting Month, and Cullman City Schools hopes to use the seminar as a chance to give back to local parents and provide resources for them to be more digitally aware. The event will host two main speakers who bring a wealth of knowledge, with key topics set to include internet content filtering, cyberbullying, vaping and environmental sensors, and information about on-campus tools like digital door access technology.”

Hartselle Attorney Patrick Caver and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey will be the featured speakers. Caver will educate attendees on the necessity of online activity monitoring by parents and caregivers. Bailey will address the grave consequences of distracted driving and texting while driving.

“Parents will leave the meeting with a better understanding of how we protect our students on campus and ways to monitor online activity at home,” Fowlkes concluded in his statement.
