GASTON, Ala. – After taking a tough loss at Glencoe last week, the Holly Pond Broncos looked for a bounce back win Friday night when they arrived in Gaston. The Broncos led the Bulldogs early in the second quarter, but Gaston was able to pull away and fend off a late comeback effort from Holly Pond to pick up a 28-26 win.
Holly Pond struck first early in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead and following a Gaston touchdown that cut the lead to 7-6, the Broncos found the end zone again to take a 13-6 lead early in the second quarter. However, the Bulldogs responded quickly and scored again to pull ahead and take a 14-13 lead over Holly Pond midway through the second. The Broncos answered back with a quick strike of the own and put six more points on the board to retake a 19-13 lead going into locker room at halftime.
A Gaston touchdown put the Bulldogs back in front 22-19 late in the third quarter and they found the end zone once again later in the fourth to make it a 28-19 game. Holly Pond punched one into the end zone with just over four minutes remaining to trim the lead to 28-26 but Gaston recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the rest of the time on the clock to secure a 28-26 win over the Broncos.
Holly Pond falls to 0-7 with the loss and the Broncos will be looking for their first win when they travel to take on West End next week.
