CULLMAN, Ala. – The City of Cullman Planning Commission approved a conditional use request for a new apartment building consisting of 240 units and located on Fourth Street Southwest (U.S. Highway 278 West) across from West Elementary School. The commission voted to recommend the 7-acre property, which will have a clubhouse, patio, pavilion, pool and other amenities, following a public hearing Tuesday evening.
Public hearings were also held for short-form subdivisions for properties on Third Avenue Southeast and Main Avenue Northwest. Third Avenue Southeast, commonly known as Old Hanceville Highway, saw a portion of the former Old Edward subdivision divided into two lots. On Main Avenue Northwest, properties where Wilborn Outdoors is located, between Katherine Street Northwest and Brunner Street Northwest, were combined into one lot.
The final plat subdivision for Phase VI of Heritage Village, located off Welti Road Southeast, was discussed regarding drainage, asphalt and water back testing inspections that have not yet been performed. With a performance bond in place, the subdivision was approved with numerous contingencies.
The proposed site plans for apartments to be located on Third Avenue Southeast (Old Hanceville Highway) were reviewed. These plans are for the hotly debated area adjacent to Carroll Acres. Planning Commission Chairman Mike Voss noted a 2020 traffic study and suggested an additional traffic study would become necessary if and when additions are made to the property. Landscaped buffer zones were discussed as well, and the plans were approved.
An annexation request for a property at 1742 Lake David Dr. NW off St. Joseph Drive Northwest was approved and will be recommended to the Cullman City Council, as was an amendment to the City of Cullman Zoning Ordinance.
The City of Cullman Planning Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month at Cullman City Hall.
