CULLMAN, Ala. – The United Way of Cullman County recently launched a referral-based gas card program to help residents who need assistance get the services they need from local nonprofits and ministries.
“The idea of this program is for us to help those without the financial means to get to one of our nonprofit agencies or ministries in the community to get the help they need right now,” United Way of Cullman County Executive Director Waid Harbison said. “So many people are not able to go get the help they need because they are not able to physically get to these agencies due to higher prices of gas not allowing them to get where they need to for help. On top of this, with rising costs for groceries and other goods, there is a major increase of those who need assistance right now due to the extremely high inflation.”
Residents who need gas cards should reach out to the nonprofit or ministry where they receive services. Referrals made by these organizations will come to the United Way, which will issue $10 gas cards. Gas cards will only be issued upon referrals.
“We know gas is very expensive, and the $10 will not go a long way, but we are really hoping it can make the difference for some people who otherwise could not get to the services they desperately need,” said Harbison. “Additionally, if the person does not have a vehicle, we are hoping the $10 gas card might help a friend, family (member) or neighbor be more encouraged to take the time to drive them to get any major help they need from local nonprofits and ministries.”
Any nonprofit or ministry in Cullman County is eligible to refer someone for a gas card.
