VINEMONT, Ala. – At its regular meeting Tuesday evening, the Vinemont Town Council discussed community projects, including the development of an art park at the South Vinemont Trail.
The council said Vinemont Welding & Fabrication gave a quote of $3,400 to manufacture metal jungle animals to decorate the park, then offered to drop the price by $500 to support the beautification project.
Artist Jack Tupper, who has painted murals all over Cullman County, has been commissioned to paint a jungle scene on the back wall of the restrooms, facing the park.
Plans for the art park have not yet been finalized, but the council discussed the possibility of completing the park for a grand opening by Christmas.
Richard Neese proposed another community project, a barbecue cookoff, to support the town’s new butcher shop, The Butcher Meat Co. Neese volunteered to take on the coordination and expense of the project and only asked the Town to block off a portion of the road from U.S. Highway 31 to possibly Tillery Road during the event so vendors will have space to cook, and attendees can walk on the road safely.
The project has been tentatively planned for Oct. 22, based on council approval.
Said Neese, “I think this could turn into an annual event that can raise funds. You saw the fireworks and how many people were there. Any extra proceeds would benefit beautification for the town.”
The council approved a traffic light upgrade for $10,000, coming out of the General Fund. Goodwin Road resurfacing was approved in the amount of $65,000- $19,083 will come from the Town’s Rebuild Alabama account, $20,000 from the Capital Improvement account, $10,000 from the 4&5 Cent account and $15,917 from American Rescue Plan funds.
The council voted to replace pipe on Ridgeway Street north of the fire department for $3,000, also from American Rescue Plan funds. It also voted to rent two bounce houses for the Freedom Fest to be held at Vinemont schools Aug. 5 from 5-8 p.m.
Public Works Director Mike Graves reported that the bleachers at the sports complex are completely installed, and the walking trail bathroom toilets and faucets have been replaced.
The Vinemont Town Council meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m., with a work session at 5:30. The public is welcome to attend.
