CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Board of Education approved a $1 million investment to its employees at a board meeting on Thursday morning, which will be dispersed in 2%-15% wage increases. This will be in addition to the statewide pay raise issued by the State of Alabama.
Alabama’s $8.3 billion state education budget, an increase of $589 million over the last budget, promises a minimum of 4% for teachers with less than nine years in the classroom teaching up to a 21% increase for more tenured instructors in the K-12 school systems. The state budget is set to begin on October 1, 2022.
Cullman City Schools Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff announced his district’s raises as well.
“Other contributing factors to this investment include moving from a 188-day calendar for teachers to a 187-day calendar; however, we are still paying our employees for 188 days,” said Kallhoff. “We’re offering, already approved this summer, a free $15,000 life insurance policy for all full-time employees and, also approved earlier this summer, we’re removing student tuition costs for full-time employees who live out of the district.”
Expressing his gratitude for the salary committee and teacher advocates, Kallhoff also thanked James Brumley, the district’s chief financial officer, saying, “He was instrumental in finding these funds while still balancing out a $42 million capital project that’s taking place right now.”
