CULLMAN, Ala. Community Action Partnership of North Alabama (CAPNA) implemented their NeighborWorks program at two homes in Cullman this week.

Candy Ayers, CAPNA’s director of Homeownership Services, said, “We serve five counties now including Cullman, Lawrence, Morgan, and we just picked up Winston and Marion Counties. In Decatur, for the past six years, we’ve done a block makeover where we take the whole block and tidy up, landscape, pressure wash, paint and whatever else needs to be done.

“We’ve been wanting to come to Cullman, but it was really hard to find homeowners because the houses that needed it most are rentals, and we target homeowners. But we found two houses, one here on Brunner Street and the other on Ann Street.

“We have a veteran in this home and a person with disabilities at the other. We’re helping them and doing what we can today and tomorrow.”

Staff members from CAPNA along with community and church volunteers provided the sweat equity for the two projects in Cullman.

Trae Norrell is a board member of CAPNA, pastor at Grace Chapel Community Church on Main Avenue SW and Branch Manager at Byars Wright Insurance.

Putting down the extension wand of the pressure washer, he shared, “We’re starting out with pressure washing today. We’ve trimmed trees and pruned to open it up. Now, we’re getting the siding cleaned.

“I think it’s always important to be a part of the community, to give back to the community. Anytime we have the opportunity, especially with a veteran of the armed forces, to be a neighbor is a wonderful call.”

Programs offered by CAPNA include foster grandparents, energy assistance, children’s services, home weatherization, senior companionship, homeownership services, rental assistance and affordable housing.

CAPNA’s home office is located in Decatur and a satellite office is located at 107 2nd Avenue NE in Cullman. For more information, please visit their website at https://capna.org/ or reach out to the Cullman office at 256-734-5170.
