CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman’s Annual City versus County Blood Drive is quickly approaching and most of us meet the requirements to participate and stake our claim.

On Friday, June 3, city donations will be held at Dick Sporting Goods and Walmart North on Hwy 157. The county donation sites will be at the Cullman County Courthouse and Walmart South on Olive St. SW.

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers reports a nationwide blood shortage, which means there is no better time than now to donate.

Most of us have known people in our community or within our own families who have suffered the horrors of cancer. Many cancer diagnoses require blood and platelet transfusions. Donating blood is one way we can honor or memorialize our loved ones who have suffered from cancer.

Many donations go to patients who undergo major surgical procedures in addition to people who have suffered major traumas due to automobile accidents.

Donors must be age 16 or older. If age 16, the donor will need written parental consent. The donor must also weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. All potential donors will need to show a photo ID.

All donors will receive a free cholesterol screening, custom T-shirt and Cattlemen’s Association steak sandwich.

As we wrap up Memorial Day celebrations, we have the opportunity to pay our respect with more than just a BBQ. We can donate. May each Cullman citizen who deems themself as blessed consider blessing another by giving blood.

Average Americans are never placed in the position to be lifesavers. By donating blood, we become just that – lifesavers. What an honor!
