WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point High Quiz Bowl team is preparing to represent their school in a 108-team national competition—The National Academic Quiz Tournaments’ Small School National Championship Tournament—Friday, April 22. The event will take place at the at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Illinois April 22-24.

Quiz bowl is a competitive activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports and popular culture.  The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas. Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.

West Point has competed in the Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT) seven times.  Most recently, in 2021, they made the playoffs and finished in fifth place and have been the Cullman County Champions for 10 years. They have won the 5A state title in 2016, 2017 and most recently, in 2021. This year, the team finished second in the 5A state competition at Jeff State CC in Hoover. Coach Lee Henry said, “We lost a heart-breaking 5A Championship Round against Russellville. It was a tough loss, but one bright spot was that our 9th grade team captain, Brodie Henry, made the All-State team. He is only West Point’s second All-State player in school history. Our last was Will Parker back in 2017.”

The current team brings some nationals experience: Brodie Henry and John Davis Yovino played the 2021 Middle School National Championship Tournament, and Judd Douglas, Carter Duke, Brodie Henry, and Abigail Roy played the 2021 Small School National Championship Tournament.

The SSNCT is the only quiz bowl national championship pitting small schools against each other. It has one division, the Small Schools division, containing non-selective public schools with 500 or fewer students in their top three grades, and another division, the Very Small Schools Division, for other schools with 350 or fewer students in their top three grades.

At the SSNCT, the West Point team will be competing in the Small Schools (Traditional Public Schools) Division against 55 other schools, and will be captained by Brodie Henry, who will be joined by Judd Douglas, Carter Duke, Abigail Roy and John Davis Yovino. The team will be coached by Lee Henry.

Tournament results will be updated throughout the three days of competition at http://www.naqt.com/go/stats/12401 so everyone can follow the team’s progress.  You can also follow #ssnct on Twitter for updates.   For more information on the SSNCT, visit https://www.naqt.com/ssnct/2022/details.jsp.
