GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Cullman County Schools held their first annual Career Fair at Good Hope High School on Friday, April 8. Each Cullman County school had a booth set up to provide information to prospective educators. Anyone interested in working for the education system as a teacher, bus driver, custodian, etc. had the opportunity to meet the principals of the schools and submit their resumes.

Some of the schools have open positions currently, but most were taking resumes to keep on file in case of a future opening in the spring. Fairview Elementary Principal Marty Hardman said, “We don’t know what is going to be available, so we’re just greeting and taking resumes. If something comes up, we’ll have a file here to go through. A lot of people know they have openings, so it’s really good for them because they can get a face-to-face without it being official.”

All county schools have the same benefits for their teachers and salaries are based on years of experience. Each school provided information such as their graduation rates, number of students and teachers, average ACT scores and other goals and accomplishments.

West Point Principal Heath Yearwood discussed the variety of people the fair had attracted, saying, “Some people graduated in December and they’re just introducing themselves. One graduated in ’20 and is in another system, but he would like to come here, and then some people will be graduating and are doing their student teaching now, so really we have a wide variety.”

He continued, “I think it’ll be something that’ll grow even more once people know about it, but it’s really a good thing. It gives people a lot of opportunities. We’ve had some people from out-of-state come in that know they are going to be moving to the area.”

Assistant Superintendent of Cullman County Schools Richard Orr hopes the event will become an annual event. The career fair is an effort at finding future employees in anticipation of future shortages when teachers retire or change positions and will hopefully help to prevent short staffing.
