WEST POINT, Ala. – Both West Point varsity squads returned home for a pair of games against Fairview Thursday night and both teams were able to collect wins over the Aggies. The Lady Warriors shut out Fairview 3-0 to improve to 7-4 on the year and the Warriors topped the Aggies 3-1 to improve their record to 7-4-1.
Kyli Armstead scored a pair of goals in the win for West Point and Hope Lee added a goal as well. Vanesa Garcia assisted on all the goals for the Lady Warriors and Kali King preserved the shut out in goal. Head Coach Rob Whitesell was proud of the way his team finished the game Thursday night to put away a Fairview team that was hanging with them all night.
“Fairview vs. West Point is always a tough game, no matter what the sport,” Whitesell said. “Soccer is no different and despite the final score, this game was neck-and-neck until the final five minutes. It wasn’t our best effort, but we can be happy that it is behind us as an area win.”
In the boys’ game, Omar Segunda deflected a shot off a defender and into the back of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. The Aggies responded and tied things up at 1 just a few minutes later but Segunda scored on a penalty kick to put West Point back in front 2-1 and his third goal came late in the game to secure a 3-1 win for the Warriors. West Point’s boys set the school record for goals in a season during the win Thursday night and both teams will host big matches against Priceville Monday night.
