PREP SPORTS: Addison Bulldogs, Lady Bulldogs drop Saturday matchups

ADDISON, Ala. – Both Addison’s baseball and softball teams were in action Saturday but unfortunately, both of them received losses. The Bulldogs hosted the Sumiton Christian Eagles and lost a tough one 11-5 while the Lady Bulldogs were eliminated from the Winston County Softball Tournament by the Lynn Lady Bears 4-2.

Sumiton Christian 11 – Addison 5 (Baseball)

The seventh-ranked Addison Bulldogs baseball team hosted perennial 1A baseball power Sumiton Christian Eagles Saturday Morning and came away with a 11-5 loss. The Eagle bats came out red hot as they put up a 7 spot in the top of the first. With Eagle runners on 1st and 2nd and only one out, Ashton Whiten gapped a double that scored Sam Nix from second. After a strikeout, Justin Hicks crushed a pitch to deep left center field for a three-run home run. This gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead and they weren’t done. A single by Jake White was followed by a hit batter putting two men on base. Landon Shumate singled driving in White. Yancey Young, in his second plate appearance of the inning, stroked a line drive double that brought in two more Eagle runs to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead before the hometown Bulldogs even got to bat.

Addison answered back for two of their own in the bottom of the second. A one out hit batter was followed by a Christian Roberts double to right center putting runners on second and third with one out. Eighth grader Jackson Williams scored on a passed ball with Roberts moving to third. Briley Holt walked putting runners on 1st and 3rd with one out. Lane Tubb grounded out pitcher to first which allowed Roberts to score. This cut the lead to 7-2.

The Eagles struck back for one run in the third and one run in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Addison answered back with two in their half of the fourth. Williams singled and that was followed by a two out single from Holt giving the Bulldogs runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Tubb lashed a double bringing home Williams and Holt.   

The Eagles put the game away with two more in the fifth. Young led off with a single which was followed with Nix reaching on an error. Tyler Ingle hit a sacrifice fly allowing Young to score. One out later, Jake McDonald singled putting runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. A passed ball allowed another run to make the score 11-4.

Addison got their last run with the help of two Eagle errors to make the final score 11-5.

Addison was led by Williams who went 1-2 with two runs scored. Jed Wilkins went 1-3 with a walk and run scored. Roberts went 1-3 with a double and a run scored. Holt went 1-2 with a walk and stolen base. Tubb went 1-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Sumiton Christian was led by Young going 4-4 with a walk, run scored and two RBIs. Nix went 1-5 with three runs scored. Ingle went 2-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Whiten went 1-3 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and two walks. McDonald went 1-4 with a run scored. Hicks went 3-4 with a home run, run scored and three RBIs. Jake White went 1-3 with a run scored. Kaden Parrish had a run scored and RBI. Shumate went 1-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Lynn 4 – Addison 2 (Softball)

The Lady Bulldogs were eliminated from the Winston County Softball Tournament by the Lynn Lady Bears, a team that they had beaten in the first round of the double elimination tourney, by a score of 4-2.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when Lady Bear Joliey Sims earned a one-out walk. One out later, Kamri Tittle crushed an Anna Grace Luker pitch over the right field fence to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead.

Addison tied it up in the bottom of the third inning. Anna Grace singled and that was followed by a Saige Carter single. Dacey Baker reached on an error which loaded the bases with no one out. Lexie Luker lined a shot towards the first baseman who made a nice grab and tagged first base to get the double play. Cara Bolinger came through in the clutch for the Lady Dawgs as she singled to left bringing home Anna Grace and Carter to tie the game up at 2.

It didn’t stay tied long as the Lady Bears Molly Pate singled and stole second base. After a strikeout, Annie Hosler singled moving Pate to third. Hosler stole second base putting runners on second and third with one out. After another strikeout, Ashley Aldridge roped a two runs single brining home Hosler and Pate. This gave the Lady Bears a 4-2 lead which was how the game would end.

Addison was led by Anna Grace who went 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Carter went 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Baker went 1-3. Bolinger went 1-3 with two RBIs. Josie Riddle went 1-2 with a walk.

Anna Grace went the distance giving up four earned runs, allowing five hits with a walk and striking out 12.

Lynn was led by Tittle was 1-3 with a home run, run scored and two RBIs. Hosler went 1-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Aldridge went 1-3 with a stolen base and two RBIs. Bella Harper went 1-3. Pate went 1-3 with a run scored and stolen base. Sims had a walk and run scored.

Harper, a seventh grader, went the distance for the win. Harper finished with seven hits, two earned runs, a walk and two strikeouts.
