CULLMAN, Ala. – St. Bernard Prep School’s varsity Saints claimed a matched set at home Tuesday evening, as the boys’ and girls’ teams each scored 4-0 shutouts over in-county rival Fairview High School.
“Our girls played very well,” said girls’ team coach Will Drake. “We dominated the space, passed really well through the middle, and defended intensely.
“I’m especially proud of Yesenia Aburto-Santiago. She scored the first goal tonight, and I believe that’s her first goal, too. We had missed a few chances before then, but her goal boosted the team and helped us realize how well we were playing. On the other end, our defense was strong tonight. Centrally, Emma Powell and Pepper Hastings were powerful, and Emma kept everything organized. Sarah Woods was reliable, as always, and Allie Stewart in goal kept the clean sheet. I’m proud of the fullbacks, too–Caroline McBride and Annabelle Marte. I challenged them with some new ideas at halftime. They adapted well, and we looked even stronger second half. Overall, we were really difficult to break down.”
Boys’ team coach Gregg Bissot said, “The St. Bernard Prep Boys’ Soccer team continues showing great improvement with a 4-0 shutout last night,” Bissot said. “They were able to score two goals in the first half after some fortunate plays. The second half brought two more. We were very proud of their play after scoring four goals, but especially proud of the defense for holding a good Fairview team to no goals.”
Drake added, “Nick Feldner has a great program going at Fairview, girls and boys. I was glad to have them with us tonight. They play good soccer, and it was a fun game for the fans.”
