HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Holly Pond Lady Broncos returned home Tuesday night to take on Arab, but the Lady Knights were able to leave with a 5-2 win. The score was knotted at 2 after five innings but Arab pulled away with three runs in the sixth.
Arab drew three straight walks against Holly Pond starter Lexie Smith to start out the game and a two-run single put them up, 2-0. Smith settled down after that as she got the final three outs to get out with limited damage. The Lady Broncos looked to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Rebecca Bell got hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, then Addison Armstrong reached on a bunt single. Madyson Rickman flew out to left and that allowed both runners to move to second and third with one out. But back-to-back strikeouts got the Lady Knights out of the huge jam.
Holly Pond finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rickman lined a triple to center field and ended up scoring on a Lady Knight error to cut the Arab lead to 2-1. The Lady Knights loaded the bases with one out, but Smith was able to get out of the big jam by inducing a fly out and a line out. Holly Pond got a two-out rally started in the bottom of the fifth as Kaylee Stallings drew a walk and later scored on a Bell RBI double as that tied the game up at two.
Arab started a one-out rally in the top of the sixth inning as a double, single, and a fielder’s choice saw them load up the bases. New pitcher Emma Ray Spitzer looked to get the Lady Broncos out of yet another jam, but the Lady Knights had other plans and an RBI infield single gave them a 3-2 lead. A throwing error brought home another run and another RBI infield single pushed Arab’s lead to 5-2.
Holly Pond looked to answer in its half of the sixth inning. Brooke Hill hit a one-out single, then Molly Neal drew a walk. But a pop out and a fly out ended the bottom half of the sixth and the Lady Broncos went down in order in their final at-bats as they ended up falling to the Lady Knights, 5-2.
Bell finished with a hit and an RBI for Holly Pond (1-2). Hill and Widner each added a pair of hits and Armstrong ended up with a hit. The Lady Broncos will stay at home on Thursday as they will take on Fairview.
