CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday evening approved multiple measures intended to upgrade and expand facilities at the Cullman Regional Airport. It awarded the bid for construction of a 100-foot by 100-foot corporate hangar to Albertville-based Complete Construction, LLC in the amount of $1,150,304. One other bid was received from Shelby Company, LLC of Birmingham in the amount of $1,698,556. According to Airport General Manager Ben Harrison, the hangar will be used for maintenance. Since the airport is a joint venture, the Cullman County Commission will also have to approve the project.
The council also passed a resolution authorizing the mayor and city clerk to secure financing for “multiple capital improvements at the Cullman Regional Airport including but not limited to the construction of hangars, purchase of lands, and other smaller airport projects.”
The council also approved a contract for Avgas and Jet-A fuel for the airport with Epic Fuels.
Recycling center closer to reality
The council awarded a bid for the building materials for a recycling center to AGCOR Steel in the amount of $120,833.50, and a bid for the labor to construct the recycling center to 5 Starr Contracting in the amount of $84,000.00. The resolutions did not list other bidders. The facility will allow the cleaning of materials and an expansion of commercial recycling.
Parks and Recreation continues growth
The council awarded a bid to purchase timber from the site of the new civic center/sports complex near the Cullman Wellness and Aquatics Center to Thompson Appalachian Hardwood, in the amount of $32,258.17. Removal of the timber will clear the land for construction of the new center.
Cullman Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Director Nathan Anderson told the council that the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center’s new water park is progressing well, with tentative plans to open by Memorial Day weekend.
The council also approved resolutions to:
- award the bid for a single cab work truck with a long utility bed to Freeland Automotive in the amount of $40,595
- award the bid for material telehandler equipment to Artec Tractor in the amount of $47,900
- update the city’s Hazard Mitigation Plan to current standards
The council also approved a special event request from Katherine Sharp of First United Methodist Church Sonshine Preschool for a 5k Run and 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, April 9, 2022 from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
The Cullman City Council meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at Cullman City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
