CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Natural Resources Planning Committee will be holding a tree sale Saturday, Feb. 19 at the North Alabama Agriplex, located at 1714 Tally Ho Street in Cullman. The Natural Resources Planning Committee offers landowner events throughout the year to educate the public about best management practices for different types of land. They participate in youth programs like FAWN (Forestry Awareness Week Now) which is a program that teaches sixth graders in city and county schools about facets of forestry like soils and animals. The group also sponsors the FFA Forestry judging contest. The proceeds from the tree sale will go to the FAWN and FFA programs.

Bare root and seedlings will be sold for $2 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or until sold out. Ten tree and six shrub species will be available.

The Agriplex will also hosted an informational program Friday to discuss the characteristics of the various trees and shrubs for sale. Extension Coordinator Kira Simms stated, “The primary purpose is to go over the different trees that will be available for sale on Saturday so that folks know: how big does the tree get, what type of environmental locations does the tree work well in or not work well in, what’s the tree going to look like in the fall, what type of fruit does it produce, just kind of some basic characteristics of the tree that might be helpful for homeowners as they’re deciding what would work good for their landscape.”

The tree species available on Saturday will be red maple, sugar maple, pawpaw, flowering dogwood, persimmon, southern magnolia, white oak, scarlet oak, sassafras and bald cypress.

The shrub species will be beauty berry, sweetshrub, strawberry bush, oakleaf hydrangea, Japanese snowball and variegated weigela.
