COUNTY TOURNAMENT: West Point tops Fairview 51-33 to advance to JV Girls Finals

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – West Point and Fairview tipped things off with a JV Girls semifinal matchup at the Cullman County Tournament Friday night. The Lady Aggies trailed by just at halftime but were outscored 23-13 by West Point in the second half, allowing the Lady Warriors to pull away and take a 51-33 win. With the win, West Point has secured its spot in the JV Girls County Championship Game against Good Hope.

Darby Nichols scored the first basket of the night to put the Lady Aggies in front 2-0 and she split a pair of free throws on their next possession to make it 3-0. Jaelyn Faulkner responded with a basket on the other end to cut the lead to 3-2 but Nichols hit right back with a three-pointer to make it a 6-2 game. Patton Fell knocked down a three of her own for the Lady Warriors to make it a 1-point game and Caitlee Simmons drained another one from beyond the arc to give West Point an 8-6 lead midway through the opening period. After splitting a pair of free throws, Camryn Faulkner laid one in to extend the lead to 11-6 and Lela Fisher scored just before the buzzer to make it a 13-6 game going into the second quarter.

Peyton Defoor scored five quick points for the Lady Aggies at the start of the second, trimming the lead to 13-11 but free throws by Simmons, Jaelyn Faulkner and Camryn Faulkner built the lead back up to five. Nichols netted two free throws and another three-pointer to cut the lead to 18-16 midway through the period baskets by Camryn Faulkner and Fell put the Lady Warriors back ahead 22-16. Kiley Stevens drained a pair of free throws to make it a 4-point game, but West Point got the points right back when Camryn Faulkner scored on the other end. Faulkner added a pair of free throws on the next possession to extend the lead to 26-18 and Stevens and Kealie Harbison traded baskets in the final minute of the half to make it a 28-20 game at the break.

Nichols and Fisher traded baskets to start the third quarter and Jaelyn Faulkner converted an and-one play at the line to put the Lady Warriors in front 33-22. After splitting a pair of free throws, Fell buried a three-pointer to stretch the lead to 37-22. Stevens scored for Fairview on the other end to cut into the lead, but Camryn Faulkner was able to score underneath the basket in the final seconds of the period to put West Point on top 39-24 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Another Nichols three trimmed the lead to 39-27 early in the fourth but the Lady Warriors dominated the final six minutes of the game, staring with a pair of three-pointers from Fisher and Fell. Jaelyn Faulkner and Simmons each scored to add to the lead midway through the period and the Lady Aggies were unable to rally from the deficit. West Point went on to defeat Fairview 51-33.

Fell and Camryn Faulkner each posted 12 points for West Point in the win. Jaelyn Faulkner and Simmons each added eight. Nichols led the way for the Lady Aggies with 16 points in the loss and Stevens and Defoor each finished with six.

The Lady Warriors will face Good Hope for the JV Girls County Championship Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
