William James Welsh, age 98, of Cullman, passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born August 18, 1923, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Edward I. and Eleanor Welsh.
Mr. Welsh served in the U.S. Army as part of the 94th Infantry Division for four years on the ground. He was part of the D-Day recovery, and he was a decorated sergeant.
After serving our country, he married Eleanor and received a degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He then served as maintenance manager of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cullman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son: Glenn Welsh.
Survivors include his wife of 74 years: Eleanor Welsh; daughter: Janet (Curtis) Doyle; sons: Gary (Rose) Welsh and John Welsh; grandchildren: William J. (Lakeisha) Welsh, Juiliet Welsh and Jessie (Chris) Brogan; great-grandson: Lawrence Brogan; sister: Theresa Cancro and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
