HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville Bulldogs returned home to Lane Horton Gymnasium Tuesday night for a pair of big area matchups against Oneonta and four quarters weren’t enough to settle things between the Bulldogs and the Redskins. Hanceville and Oneonta went to overtime in the boys’ game and the Bulldogs were able to edge the Redskins 64-62 in the extra period to pick up a huge area win. The Lady Bulldogs were tied with the Lady Redskins after one half of play, but Oneonta was too much in the second half and pulled away to win it 55-38.

Oneonta 55 – Hanceville 38 (Varsity Girls)

Hanceville got off to a slow start as Oneonta jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead. Kate Sterling nailed a short jumper to put the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard with 3:38 remaining in the opening period. Savanna McAnnally got red-hot to finish out the quarter for Hanceville as she scored their final seven points of the period, including a pair of threes, to give the Lady Bulldogs a 9-8 lead going into the second period.

Jolee McHan hit a layup to give Hanceville a three-point lead, but Oneonta tied it up on a three. McHan hit another show down low and McAnnally drilled another shot from long range to stretch the Lady Bulldog lead to five at 16-11 with 5:35 remaining in the first half. A 9-2 run by the Lady Redskins, though, gave them a 20-18 lead. McHan finished out on what was a strong second quarter for her with a short jumper as both teams went into the half tied up at 20.

The score was tied up at 24 almost midway through the third quarter when Oneonta scored six in a row to give them a 30-24 lead. A Katelyn Boyd three and a McHan basket trimmed the deficit to just one at 30-29. Later on, though, another Lady Redskin trey stretched their lead to 38-31. Victoria Stanley picked a perfect time to get her first points of the game as she drilled a long-range shot before the buzzer to swivel the deficit to four at 38-34 going into the final period.

Another Stanley trey made it a 41-38 game with 4:44 remaining in the contest, but unfortunately, that ended up being Hanceville’s last basket of the game as Oneonta scored the final 14 points of the game and the Lady Bulldogs ended up dropping a tough game to the Lady Redskins, 55-38.

McHan finished the game with 14 points for Hanceville (4-7, 0-2). McAnnally added 11 points. Stanley ended up with six points. Boyd added five points and Sterling chipped in with two points.

Hanceville 64 – Oneonta 62 (OT) (Varsity Boys)

A Braxton Broad three-point play gave Hanceville an early 3-2 lead. A Brayden Harris trey gave the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead, but Oneonta scored five straight points to give them a 10-6 lead. Hanceville went on a huge run to end the first quarter and it started with Will Calvert and Noah Jones hitting shots down low. Zach Campbell finished it off with six straight points, including a layup just before the buzzer, as the Bulldogs went into the second quarter with a 16-10 lead.

The Redskins quickly trimmed Hanceville’s lead to one to start out the second period, but a Carson Garrett layup and a Jones trey from the right corner quickly pushed the Bulldog lead back up to six at 21-15. But another huge run by Oneonta saw them get the lead right back at 23-21. After a Redskin free throw gave them a 26-23 lead, it would be Harris that would give Hanceville a huge boost going into the half as he hit a pair of huge shots down low to give them a 27-26 lead at the break.

A Calvert trey from the right corner increased Hanceville’s lead to 30-26 to start out the second half. Seven straight points by Oneonta gave them a 33-30 lead and later stretched their lead to 38-32 with a little over five minutes to go in the third period. But back-to-back baskets by Campbell and a trey by Broad gave the Bulldogs a 39-38 lead. The Redskins, though, would be the team to end the quarter strong, hitting a three and Hanceville would go into the final period down by just two at 41-39.

Oneonta increased their lead to 46-41 to start out the fourth quarter and later held a 50-45 lead late in the final period, but a huge three-point play by Harris trimmed the deficit to just two at 50-48 with 1:45 remaining in the contest. Later on, after missing some free throws, Campbell quickly redeemed himself as he got a huge steal and ended up finding Calvert down low to tie the game up at 50. A Calvert three-point play gave them a 53-52 lead with 26 seconds to go in the game, but the Redskins converted on one of their own to take a 55-53 lead. A driving layup by Campbell tied the game up at 55 and this huge region game would be decided in overtime.

A huge three by Campbell gave Hanceville a three-point lead in overtime and he later added a pair of free throws to make it a 60-57 game. The Redskins, though, scored four straight points to take a 61-60 lead. A free throw gave the Redskins a two-point lead, but Campbell hit a pair from the line to tie the game up at 62. Harris then forced an Oneonta turnover to give the ball back to Hanceville with a chance to win it in overtime. Campbell drove down the middle of the lane and found Broad for an enormous layup to give the Bulldogs a two-point lead with eight seconds remaining in overtime. Oneonta’s shot to win the game was off and Hanceville ended up picking up a huge win at home as they held off the Redskins, 64-62.

Campbell finished the game with 23 points for Hanceville (11-2, 2-0). Harris added 12 points. Calvert ended up with 10 points. Broad added eight points, including the game-winning layup. Garrett ended up with six points and Jones finished with five points. Hanceville will travel to Holly Pond Thursday night.
