CULLMAN, Ala. – Dirty Dawg Pet Spa & Rescue gathered beside the local Busy Bee Café and set up their tent to participate in the pet-friendly Howl-O-Ween event Saturday evening. While the festivities had a bit of a slow start due to the weather, attendance picked up quickly throughout the evening. Dirty Dawg Pet Spa & Rescue owner Stephanie Hill decorated their booth with an assortment of baskets that, she explained, they were selling in support of the rescue’s bills.

She also spoke with The Tribune on the rescue’s mission, sharing, “We were going to bring some cats and dogs for people to look at adopting but because the weather was getting bad, we did not want them to get rained on. So, we are actually just selling these baskets and stuff to raise money for our vet bill. The dogs and cats that come in get anything that they need. We have a little schnauzer right now that is being treated for heartworms and stuff and so we have a huge vet bill.”

Hill continued, “We take a lot of the animals that are going to be euthanized at the shelter. We are located in Vinemont, down by the school. It isn’t even that far away, but a lot of people do not even know about us. We are hoping by springtime to have a spay and neuter clinic started. It will probably be in Vinemont, but we are looking for a bigger building.”

The adoption process begins once the animals have been treated and rehabilitated; however, the rescue is currently limited to a smaller space. “We have so many animals. People leave them and actually the shelter, the officers bring us animals if we have room because they know they will be euthanized. We do most of our adoptions on Petfinder and they go all over. One actually went to Virginia,” she explained.

The Cullman Tribune was informed however, that the Cullman County Animal Shelter is not in partnership with Dirty Dawg Pet Spa & Rescue, and does not send dogs there in the rare event that they are scheduled to be euthanized, according to Cullman County Animal Shelter Manager Andrea Hudson.
