WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Warriors returned home Friday night after last week’s road trip to Douglas to square off against another strong region opponent. This time it was the Guntersville Wildcats and the Warriors fought until the clock hit zero, but they couldn’t keep pace with Guntersville and West Point fell at home 48-6.
The Warriors won the toss and elected to defer so the Wildcats got the ball to start things off and they capped off a scoring drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it a 7-0 game. An interception cut the ensuing West Point drive short, and Guntersville added to its lead with an 8-yard touchdown run and pulled ahead 14-0 midway through the first. The Warriors were forced to punt on their next possession and the Wildcats stretched their lead to 21-0 with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the opening quarter.
West Point responded with a scoring drive of its own in the second quarter, moving the ball down the field and finishing things off with a 3-yard touchdown run by Kelton Washington to cut the lead to 21-6 with just under six minutes to play in the half. However, the Wildcats answered quickly and tossed a 25-yard touchdown into the end zone just before halftime to make it a 28-6 game at the break.
The Warriors got the ball to start the third quarter but were forced to punt the ball away to Guntersville. A 2-yard touchdown pass extended the Wildcats lead to 35-6 early in the third and on their next possession, a 55-yard touchdown pass made it a 42-6 game with just under four minutes remaining in the period.
A 10-yard touchdown run from Guntersville put six more points on the board in the fourth quarter and West Point wasn’t able to find the end zone again, so the Wildcats went on to win it over the Warriors 48-6.
Washington posted 58 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Noah Laney added 32 yards on eight carries and Suyeta DrowningBear finished with 20 yards on five carries. West Point falls to 5-4 with the loss and will be on the road to play Curry next Thursday night.
