HOLLY POND, Ala. — The Winfield Pirates traveled to Holly Pond to face the Broncos Friday night and it was an awesome night for football but unfortunately for the home crowd, the Pirates defeated the Broncos on their home field 46-0. The Broncos had nine players quarantined due to Covid-19 this week, including three starters.
Holly Pond received the opening kickoff but mishandled the ball and the Pirates recovered the ball on the Holly Pond 19-yard line.
Running back Joseph Cox took over from there with runs of 16, 2 and 1 yards to give the Pirates their first touchdown of the night. The PAT was missed, and Winfield led 6-0 with 11:15 left to play in the first quarter.
The Broncos running game got going and Holly Pond drove down to the Winfield 30 before a grounding penalty sent them back 15 yards.
Winfield Quarterback Aidan Quinn moved his team out to the 21 before connecting on a 79-yard touchdown pass to Seth Kemble. The two-point conversion was good, and Winfield led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Joseph Cox added another running touchdown in the second quarter and Jordan Mastin had a punt return for a touchdown. An interception led to another 77-yard touchdown pass, this time to Davis Bowen and at the halftime break, Winfield led 33-0.
The Pirates received the third quarter kickoff and running back Keylan Hughes wasted no time putting it into the end zone, making it a 40-0 game four minutes gone in the third.
Holly Pond running backs Kadin Suryono and Andy Light got the Broncos headed in the right direction, driving the ball down to the Pirate 30-yard line but another interception cut the possession short.
Winfield started inside its own 10-yard line after the interception, but Hughes and quarterback Brady May were able to drive the ball into Holly Pond territory. Following a personal foul call against the Broncos, running back Braxton Tilley scored for the Pirates to make it 46-0 with less than seven minutes remaining in the game Winfield held on to defeat the Broncos 46-0.
Holly Pond falls to 3-4 with the loss and will try to bounce back next week when it hosts the Susan Moore Bulldogs.
