LOCUST FORK, Ala. – After falling to region and county rival Good Hope last week, Hanceville hit the road again this week for a non-region matchup at Locust Fork. Points were hard to come by early in this one, but the Bulldogs found their rhythm in the running game and pulled away to top the Hornets 26-13 and improve to 2-3 on the year.
After a scoreless opening quarter, running back Brosnan Ward punched one into the end zone from 2 yards out and put Hanceville on top 6-0 in the final seconds of the second quarter. The Bulldogs held a 6-0 advantage going into the locker room at halftime.
Locust Fork found the end zone midway through the third quarter and took a 7-6 lead after knocking through the extra point with 6:47 remaining in the period. Hanceville responded with another scoring drive capped off by a 6-yard touchdown run from Keiton Whatley. After failing on the 2-point conversion attempt, the Bulldogs led the Hornets 12-7 with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter. Locust Fork was able to pick up more steam on the offensive end and put six more points on the board just before the end of the third to take a 13-12 lead into the fourth quarter.
Hanceville moved back in front late in the final frame when Ward scored his second touchdown of the night, this time from 11 yards out, and the Bulldogs pulled ahead 20-13 with just under five minutes on the clock. Hanceville recovered a Hornets fumble on the next possession and took advantage of the critical mistake. Ward broke free and raced to the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown and wrapped up a big, 26-13 road win for the Bulldogs. Ward scored three of Hanceville’s four touchdowns in the win.
The Bulldogs improve to 2-3 win the win and will return home next week for a regional showdown against Oneonta.
