HAZEL GREEN, Ala. – After downing Buckhorn 35-0 last week, the Cullman Bearcats hit the road again Friday night and were once again able to come back home with a win. The ‘Cats built an early lead at Hazel Green and kept the Trojans at a safe distance the rest of the way to secure a 29-21 region win.
Cullman struck first when Jake Dueland ran one in from 4 yards out to make it a 6-0 game early in the opening quarter and Dueland broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession to stretch the lead to 13-0 midway through the first. The Bearcats held a 13-0 advantage going into the second quarter, but Nate Zills drilled a 20-yard field goal to make it a 16-0 game.
Toward the end of a slow second quarter, The Trojans put together a scoring drive that ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass and cut the lead to 16-7 with less than a minute to play in the period. Cullman went to the locker room with a 16-7 lead over Hazel Green at the halftime break.
Midway through the third quarter, the Trojans scored on a 50-yard touchdown run to trim the lead to 16-14 but it took the Bearcats less than a minute to respond. On the ensuing possession, Ryan Skinner connected with Zills for a 40-yard touchdown pass to make it a 23-14 game late in the third. Later in the game with just under seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Cullman added to its lead when Evan Dye punched in a touchdown from 2 yards out and made it 29-14.
Hazel Green was able to find the end zone again with just over three minutes to play and cut the lead to 29-21 but the Bearcats were able to hold onto their lead and run out the rest of the clock to return home with a 29-21 region win.
The ‘Cats improve to 3-2 with the win and will be back home next week to take on Mars Hill.
