CULLMAN, Ala. – At the Cullman Area Technology Academy, Cosmetology is one of the many programs offered to students. The program puts students inside a salon atmosphere and is designed to jump-start their careers in the beauty industry. The program offers instruction in the latest trends across hair, skin, nails and more, while also helping students gain employable skills and experience within their chosen field. Recently, students have been sharing photos of the interesting, new fall trends they are learning and practicing as the cool weather season approaches.
While explaining the courses for the aspiring cosmetologists, Cosmetology instructor Tasha Flanigan shared, “When students enter the program, the courses taken are Introduction to Cosmetology and Chemical Services. As a second-year, students will take Introduction to Spa Techniques and Advanced Spa Techniques and as a third-year student, the courses are Haircoloring and Salon Management. Completing students will graduate with a CRI, which is a Career Readiness Indicator in Customer Service and Sales and are Barbicide certified. CATA and Wallace State have an articulation agreement, which is a partnership to recognize credits toward their degree that will transfer as long as a B average is maintained in courses.”
Tasha Flanigan is CATA’s licensed Cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor. With 30 years of experience in the beauty industry, she has passion for each area of the field. Tasha received her instructor training at Wallace State Community College, and from there, she received her master’s degree from Alabama A&M University in Technical Education. She is Barbicide certified and has also received her certification through US Trichology Institute as a hair loss practitioner.
When asked what it means to her to be the Cosmetology instructor for her students at the Cullman Area Technology Academy, Tasha shared, “[It] means so much more than just the physical act of teaching it. It means I have been given a chance to share my knowledge, to help students to grow and prosper in this field. It means allowing them to pursue their passion, supporting them along the way and so much more. Education is one of the most powerful tools in life, and I am glad I have been given the chance to touch a life forever because that is what teaching is all about.”
