SULLIGENT, Ala. – After falling to local rivals Meek and Holly Pond in their first two games of the season, the Cold Springs Eagles hit the road once again Friday night for a region showdown at Sulligent. However, the Blue Devils scored early and often to take a big lead over the Eagles. Cold Springs wasn’t able to recover, and Sulligent held on to pick up a 53-14 region win over the Eagles.
The Blue Devils found the endzone three times in the opening quarter to take a 19-0 lead over Cold Springs going into the second. Sulligent continued to add to its lead in the second, putting five more touchdowns on the board to stretch the lead to 53-0 going into the halftime break.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Eagles began to chip away at the daunting lead. Josh Winfrey found the endzone for Cold Springs to make it a 53-7 game early in the fourth quarter and Winfrey ran in his second touchdown of the night just a few minutes later but it was too little, too late for the Eagles and Sulligent held on to take the region matchup over Cold Springs 53-14. Winfrey finished with a pair of touchdowns for the Eagles in the loss.
Cold Springs falls to 0-3 on the season with the loss and will be off next week before hosting another regional showdown with Aliceville Sept. 10.
