VINEMONT, Ala. — The Vinemont Eagles hosted the Fairview Aggies Friday night in their second straight county matchup to open the season. After a very tight first half, 28 unanswered points by the Aggies helped them pull away and claim a 56-28 road victory. The Eagles played the Aggies tough in the first half but a rash of second half injuries were too much for Vinemont to overcome.
Fairview received the opening kickoff and quickly jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when Tyler Simmons broke free for a 23-yard touchdown run with 9:35 left in the opening quarter. It didn’t take long for Vinemont to answer right back on the ensuing kickoff when Colby Miller raced 98 yards for a touchdown. With 9:19 remaining in the first quarter Fairview held a 7-6 lead.
Fairview extended their led to 14-6 after Tyler Simmons found the endzone from 1 yard out with 7:04 left in the first quarter. The ensuing possession Vinemont found success on the ground, with 4:44 still left in the opening quarter Colby Miller scampered for an 11-yard touchdown to cut the led to 14-12. Once again, the Aggies quickly found the endzone when four plays later Eli Frost gave the Aggies a 21-12 lead with 3:30 to go in the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run.
The Eagles pounded the ball, a lengthy drive, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Brody Speer cut the led to 21-20 with 9:23 remaining until halftime. Parker Martin extend the Aggies led, 28-20 with 5:20 left in the opening half, with a 6-yard run. With a minute and a half to go before halftime Colby Miller found the endzone from 22 yards out, after a successful 2-point conversion the game was tied at 28 apiece. Fairview capitalized on a short field as Parker Martin gave the Aggies a 35-28 halftime led thanks to a 1-yard plunge with just 20 seconds left on the clock until halftime.
Vinemont received the second half kickoff but a turnover on downs gave the ball right back to the Aggies. With 3:57 left in the third quarter, Martin found Bryson Chamness for a 19-yard touchdown to extend the Aggies’ lead to 42-28. Three plays later, Vinemont coughed up the football. On the very next play Jameson Goble caught a 33-yard pass from Martin to extend the Aggies lead to 49-28 with 1:53 to go until the final quarter. After forcing a three and out, the Aggies got the ball back and with 7:30 remaining in the game Martin hit Caden Jennings on fourth down for a 19-yard touchdown to make it a 56-28 game. Neither team found the endzone again and Fairview collected a 56-28 road victory over its county rival.
Fairview will return home for a big region opener against Guntersville next week and the Eagles will be back on their home field for their own regional matchup with J.B. Pennington.
