HOLLY POND, Ala. – Holly Pond opened up the 2021 season on its home field Friday night and got things started with a dominant performance. The Broncos hammered Brindlee Mountain 53-0, limiting the Lions to -22 yards of total offense and racking up 270 yards on the ground. Andy Light, Austin Marsh and Landon Perkins each ran in a pair of touchdowns in the win and Nik Goodwin tacked on another score as well. Broncos Head Coach Mark Cornelius was proud of the effort his player and coaches put into Friday night’s win and looks forward to building on this momentum going forward.

“The kids did well, the coaches did an outstanding job, and we just had a good night tonight. Brindlee Mountain played hard and there are always some things we can work on and fix, but it was a great night,” Cornelius said. “It was a good way to open up the season and we’re looking forward to next week.”

Holly Pond got on the board early when Light punched in a touchdown from 3 yards out to make it 6-0 and after forcing a Brindlee Mountain punt, Light scored from 31 yards out on his next carry to make it a 14-0 game late in the opening quarter. The Broncos regained possession early in the second quarter and added to their lead when Marsh found the endzone on an 8-yard run to make it 20-0. Marsh’s second touchdown of the night, this time from 2 yards out, stretched the lead to 26-0 with just over four minutes to play in the opening half. Holly Pond got on the board one more time in the first half when Perkins scored on a 3-yard run and the Broncos went into the locker room with a 33-0 lead at the break.

Holly Pond didn’t let up in the second half. Another 3-yard scoring run by Perkins gave the Broncos a 40-0 advantage late in the third quarter and Nik Goodwin took a sweep 24 yards to score another touchdown for Holly Pond and make it a 46-0 game just before the start of the fourth quarter. The Broncos were able to find the endzone one more time when Sawyer Olinger broke loose to score from 30 yards out and put the cap on a dominant, 53-0 win for Holly Pond.

Light finished with 56 yards on eight carries, Marsh posted 55 yards on eight carries and Perkins added 52 yards on seven carries. All three collected a pair of touchdowns as well. Kadin Suryono ripped off 63 yards on five carries, Goodwin added 36 yards and a touchdown and Olinger finished with 69 yards on just three carries.

Cornelius has been part of many Holly Pond victories over the years but Friday night’s was his first as head coach.

“It’s special. This is a special community with great kids, great parents and they’ve been so supportive of us since we got the job,” Cornelius said. “I love them to death, and I appreciate everything they’ve done for us.”

The Broncos are off to a 1-0 start and they’ll be looking for another win next week when they travel to Cold Springs.
