HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Coach Ryan Brewer and the Hanceville Bulldogs hosted the Vinemont Eagles to kick off the 2021 season Thursday night and got things off to a fast start with a 28-16 win. The win is Brewer’s first in his first season as the head coach of the Bulldogs and Brewer is excited to be able to collect that first win right out of the gate. “It’s a huge relief and its awesome,” Brewer said. “We are looking forward to the future and getting this program to where it should be.”

Vinemont received the opening kickoff and marched right down the field; however, they were unable to capitalize as they came up short on fourth and goal. The Eagles defense forced a three and out quickly giving the ball back to their offense. On the first play of Vinemont’s second possession Brody Speer broke a tackle then raced 52 yards for an Eagle touchdown, putting the Eagles up 8-0 with 2:52 remaining in the opening quarter.

After an exchange of possessions, the Bulldogs were able to tie the game at 8 when Zac Campbell found Brosnan Ward for a 68-yard touchdown with 9:16 remaining in the first half. Both teams would have one more chance to score again before halftime, but a holding penalty stalled the Eagles possession and the Bulldogs’ last second pass to the endzone fell incomplete.

Hanceville took the opening kick-off of the second half and drove down the field capped off by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Campbell to JT Davis on fourth and goal, giving the Bulldogs a 14-8 lead midway through the third quarter. On the ensuing possession the Bulldogs defense forced a three and out.

After a methodical drive, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 22-8 on the first play of the fourth quarter when Campbell found the endzone from 9 yards out. Hanceville then extended the lead to 28-8 with 3:25 left remaining in the game when Bronsan Ward scored the endzone from 6 yards out. With 16 seconds remaining in the game Colby Miller connected with Kylan Richards for a 35-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 28-16 but the Eagles ran out of time and the Bulldogs held on to defeat Vinemont 28-16 and start the season 1-0.

Hanceville will enjoy an off-week next week and the Eagles will try to bounce back against another county rival when they host Fairview next Friday.

Late in the game, a Vinemont player was injured and had to be carried off on a stretcher. Please keep this young man and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
