Beverly Anna Thompson, age 73, passed away at home on August 1, 2021, in Cullman, Alabama following extended illness.
Beverly was born in Selma, Alabama on September 5, 1947, and spent her childhood in nearby Clanton, Alabama. She was a gifted student and was accepted into Judson College following her junior year of high school. After studying at Judson College and at the University of Montevallo, she received her B.A. degree in both music and English. She later received M.A. degree in behavioral science from the University of Alabama. She was a member of the Chi Omega Social Sorority, the American Mensa Society, Colonial Dames, the American Guild of Organists, the American College of Musicians, the National Music Teachers Association and the Delta Omicron Honorary Professional Fraternity. Beverly was a musical protégé of her late aunt, Beverly Hagen. Until she was medically unable to continue, she was a private music teacher and had last served 13 years as organist for the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Huntsville. Previously, she served as organist for the First Methodist Church in Gadsden and the First Presbyterian Church in Cullman. Following her graduation from Montevallo, she taught special education at schools in Lowndes, Dallas, Montgomery and Etowah Counties. Beverly also taught music at St. Bernard Preparatory School.
Beverly is survived by her husband Carey; her daughter: Brook McNew (Josh) and her son: Lee Thompson (Dedra). She is also survived by two grandsons: Brennen and Graham Thompson and by one granddaughter: Rebecca McNew. She was predeceased by her father: Percy Lee Hicks from Newport News, Virginia and her mother: Julia Ruth (Hester) Hicks from Clanton.
There will be a memorial service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Wednesday, August 4, 2021.Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 12:00 p.m.
