VINEMONT, Ala. – With the upcoming school year, the 18-week Build-It-Better program will offered in established career preparation classes for eighth-graders countywide. The Tribune spoke with Michael Williams who, along with Scotty Cofer, will be teaching the class at Vinemont Middle School.
The Build-It-Better program was established here in Cullman to provide Cullman County students with an opportunity to learn more about the workings of industry-based innovation. Williams explained, “Basically, this program gives eighth grade students a chance to be hands-on and learn about a few aspects of industry.”
During the semester, students will be introduced to a total of seven different kits to explain the concepts of industry. These kits range from precision/accuracy in manufacturing, fabrication and assembly, to topics of electronics, fiberoptics, computer programing and so much more.
Williams shared, “Overall I feel like this program is going to be an excellent addition to Cullman County Schools. At the end of the day, our job as educators is to make sure students are prepared for the world when they leave us. The We-Build-It-Better program is just another opportunity for students to discover something they love that they might turn into careers later in life. With the program’s hands-on style, students will learn to create things such as model airplanes, printing designs with 3D printers and even designing and building their own electric cars.”
Williams continued, “Many students have never operated a drill, popped a rivet, ran a 3D printer, programmed a light sensor, and more. It is the hope of this program that students can find interest that may result in a career choice for them later in life. – It’s really amazing how much industry we will cover in this program, I am beyond excited.”
Each school will receive a Snap-On rolling tool chest that contains every material needed for the classes. Students will have the opportunity to use industry-grade tools and materials to gain a full understanding of the industries within the area. According to Williams, companies such as Airbus, Amazon, Snap-On and Alabama Power have partnered with Build-It-Better to ensure that students have access to “best of the best.”
