CULLMAN, Ala. – Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 16, all back-to-school buyers can participate in the annual Sales Tax-Free Weekend. Each year on the third weekend in July, the state waives its 4% sales tax on all qualifying back-to-school items. This weekend offers parents and all school supply buyers an opportunity to save money on all the must-have items for the upcoming school year. The weekend will end at midnight Sunday, July 18, at which time the taxes will be reimposed.
As always, there are some restrictions on the list of approved items to be purchased, such as clothing accessories or equipment, protective equipment and sport or recreational equipment all which remain taxable.
Some of the most notable tax-exempt items are binders, book bags, calculators, cellophane tape, blackboard chalk, compasses, composition books, crayons, erasers, folders (expandable, pocket, plastic and manila), glue, paste, and paste sticks, highlighters, index cards, index card boxes, legal pads, lunch boxes, markers and notebooks. Also, be sure to include local businesses in your shopping trip, as many also sell approved tax-free items and can often benefit from the increased foot traffic.
A complete list of approved items for this Tax-Free Weekend can be found at https://revenue.alabama.gov.
Cullman County has also organized the United Way’s Annual Stuff-the-Bus campaign alongside Tax-Free Weekend, which will last from July 16 – July 23. Donations may be made at several drop off locations including The Cullman Tribune, the UPS Store, Comfort Care- Hospice, Cullman Chamber of Commerce, Cullman County Sherriff’s Office and Berkley Bob’s.
Make sure to take the time to stop and stock up on all the supplies your child/children may need this year. And, as always, shop local, Cullman!
