John D. Mitchell listed Cullman County as his home when he registered for the United States Army. When he served in World War II, Mitchell had the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was attached to the 83rd Infantry Division, 331st Infantry Regiment.
On July 10, 1944, Mitchell was killed in action in France. A Purple Heart recipient, Mitchell is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Detailed information such as date of birth, hometown or next of kin is unfortunately not listed.
