WEST POINT, Ala. – Both Cullman and West Point put on impressive showings over the weekend at this year’s Pre-State Blowout Tournament and Monday night they met at West Point High School to square off against each other. The Lady Bearcats took an early lead when Olivia Britton launched a 2-run bomb over the left field fence and that was all the offense they needed to leave with a 2-0 win over the Lady Warriors. Chalea Clemmons earned the start and the win in the circle after tossing a complete game, giving up just three hits and striking out 13 West Point batters.
After a scoreless first inning, Carlie Burnham was hit by a pitch to reach first base and two pitches later, Britton’s homerun gave Cullman a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. It became a pitcher’s duel between Clemmons and West Point’s Carlie Wilkins the rest of the way, with neither team having any success putting runs on the board.
Both teams scattered hits here and there, but the Lady Warriors first really threatened to score when they were down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh. A single from Lexi Kimbril and a double off the bat of Bethany Minck put runners on second and third with the winning run at the plate but Clemmons forced Lexi Shadix to fly out and the Lady Bearcats held on to win a tight road game 2-0.
Britton (2-run HR) led the way for Cullman offensively and Faith Guest posted a pair of hits as well. Savannah Davis added another hit in the win. Minck posted a pair of hits for West Point in the loss and Kimbril finished with a hit as well. Both teams combined for just seven hits in the game.
The Lady Bearcats improve to 24-11 with the win and will be back on the road to play James Clemmons next Monday while the Lady Warriors will be back home tomorrow for an area showdown against Russellville.
