CULLMAN, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council approved the plan Thursday night to fix the Styles Street Bridge that is currently closed and will remain as such until the work can be completed. The plan will have work possibly beginning in mid-June once the wettest months of spring are over.
Hanceville Public Works Director Rusty Fields presented the damage to the bridge caused by recent flooding that has left the bridge too dangerous for traffic to use. Fields explained, “What happened was when the water got so high around the head wall, it started pushing the wall out.” The bridge also developed cracks and ceiling of the bridge showed major signs of deterioration.
Fields said of the east side head wall, “It’s just about to go.” He presented a plan to the council that would cost the city an estimated $25,935 and could be completed quickly by the public works once work could begin. The bridge will be replaced with a system of culverts and rip rap to protect against future erosion.
In other business, the council approved the planning by the Hanceville Downtown Merchants to host a Grilled Cheese Festival in downtown Hanceville Saturday, May 29. More details will be available soon.
Jeremy Rice was recommended by Council member Patty Dean for Place 4 on the Industrial Development Board. The council approved the recommendation; however, they decided to table appointments to two other places on the board.
Concrete work has begun on the Edmondson Road sidewalk project. Recent flooding caused a setback as the initial work was washed away. Public works was able to repair the damage and the project is now near completion.
The Hanceville City Wide Yard sale is scheduled for April 23-24 with no permits required. This will be followed by free city landfill pickup from April 26-30. Items must be out for pick up by 6 a.m. Friday April 30.
The next Hanceville City Council meeting will be April 22 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
