GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The Good Hope Lady Raiders were finally able to get back on the floor for their sub-regional showdown with Haleyville Friday afternoon and they were able to set the tone right out of the gate. Good Hope built a 14-point lead at the half and then exploded for 34 points in the third quarter to pull away from the Lady Lions and win it 72-42. The Lady Raiders will advance to this year’s Northwest Regional Tournament with the win.

Rudi Derrick laid one in to give Good Hope an early 2-0 lead and Heather Tetro turned a steal into an easy basket to stay in front 4-2. Ivey Maddox scored down low in the post to make it 6-2 and after splitting a pair of free throws, she drained a three-pointer to stretch the lead to 10-4. Derrick and Charly Johnson each scored to make it a 14-6 game with less than a minute to play in the first and after Maddox tacked on two more free throws with nine seconds on the clock, the Lady Raiders went into the second holding a 17-6 lead.

The Lady Lions were able to cut the lead to 17-12 early in the second quarter but Maddox scored six straight points off Haleyville turnovers to put Good Hope on top 23-12 midway through the period. Derrick drilled a three-pointer and Johnson scored another basket inside to make it a 28-15 game with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half. Another bucket by Johnson, followed by an and-one play by Maddox, stretched the lead to 33-17 late in the second and Maddox laid another one in just before the buzzer to make it a 35-21 game going into the break.

Bailey Tetro converted an and-one play at the free throw line to add to the Good Hope lead at the start of the third quarter and Heather Tetro buried back to back three-pointers to make it 44-24. Another Derrick basket kept the Lady Raiders in front 46-26 and Maddox knocked down a pair of threes to extend the lead to 52-31 midway through the third. An easy transition basket for Maddox made it a 54-31 game and she laid one in on the very next possession to stretch the lead to 25. Good Hope stayed hot, and Heather Tetro drained back to back threes of her own to make it 64-34 with just over a minute to play in the period. Derrick laid one in to add to the lead late in the quarter and Heather Tetro drilled yet another three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Raiders a commanding, 69-34 advantage going into the final frame. Good Hope outscored Haleyville 34-13 in the third quarter.

Derrick scored early in the fourth to keep the run going and with the clock running throughout the remainder of the game, it was a great opportunity for some younger Lady Raiders to get some postseason experience. Neither team put many points on the board in the final period, but Good Hope’s lead was too much for the Lady Lions to overcome and the Lady Raiders pulled away to win it 72-42.

Maddox led Good Hope with 29 points in the win. Heather Tetro posted 17, Derrick added 15 and Johnson finished with six.

Good Hope will face either Deshler or Brooks in the opening round of this year’s 4A Northwest Regional Tournament. Those two squads are currently scheduled to tip Saturday at 1 p.m. A date, time and location for the Lady Raiders’ Northwest Regional matchup will be announced at a later date.
