PREP TENNIS: Cullman men, women defeat Oneonta 8-1, 9-0

CULLMAN, Ala. – Both the men’s and women’s Cullman High School Tennis teams hosted Oneonta for a pair of varsity matches Tuesday night and both squads collected a pair of convincing wins. The Lady Bearcats downed Oneonta 9-0 and the Bearcats handled the Redskins 8-1.

Cullman 9 – Oneonta 0 (Varsity girls)

The Lady Bearcats defeated Oneonta in dominant fashion Tuesday night, both in singles and doubles competition. Kate Krigbaum, Katia Peterson, Sophia Karolewics, Caroline Hill, Emma Murphree and Avery Heis all earned 8-0 singles victories over their opponents and both SaraBeth Land and Sadie Land won exhibition singles matches 8-0 and 8-2, respectively.

Doubles competition was more of the same. The doubles teams of Krigbaum and Peterson, Hill and Murphree and Karolewics and SaraBeth Land all claimed 8-0 wins. Sadie Land and Lanie Townson were 8-1 winners in an exhibition doubles match as well.

The Lady Bearcats improved to 3-0 on the season with the win and are scheduled to travel to Deshler Feb. 22.

Cullman 8 – Oneonta 1 (Varsity boys)

Cullman’s men’s team followed up the women with a dominant performance of their own. The Bearcats nearly swept singles competition with wins by Jackson Murphree (8-2), Eli Chaney (8-0), Will Shirey (8-2), Bennett Cabri (8-3) and Cooper McCoy (8-2). Chas Nesmith fell in one of the singles matches 8-6 and Landon Evans took an exhibition singles match 8-0.

The ‘Cats dominated doubles competition as well. The team of Murphree and Nesmith won 8-3, Chaney and Shirey were 8-1 winners and Cabri and Evans earned an 8-0 win.

Cullman is now 2-0 this season after defeating the Redskins and will travel to Deshler for a match with the Tigers Feb. 22.
