CULLMAN, Ala. – A retired Cullman Police officer was injured in a head-on crash Saturday afternoon. Jimmie Johnson, 72, of Baileyton was taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment of his injuries.

The crash, which happened at approximately 3:25 along Alabama Highway 69 between Alabama Highway 157 and U.S. Highway 278, was investigated by the Cullman Police Department’s (CPD’s) Traffic Homicide Investigation (THI) unit; however, there were no fatalities.

“Due to the severity of the crash, an on-duty patrol supervisor requested the Traffic Homicide Unit respond and investigate the crash,” said CPD THI Sgt. Joey Duncan.

Duncan said Johnson was traveling north on Hwy. 69 in a 2019 Nissan Frontier pickup, while Jennifer Rodriguez, 20, of Cullman was traveling south in a 2020 Mustang. He said the Mustang crossed the center line and hit the Frontier head-on.

Duncan said Rodriguez was taken to Cullman Regional in a personal vehicle for treatment of minor injuries.

“We believe fatigue was a contributing circumstance to the crash,” he said.

THI Officer Jonathan England and Lt. Jeff Warnke also investigated.
