CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) met and awarded a total of $56,000 in grants Monday night, without its usual amount of funding available, to get a few more awards distributed before the end of the year.

The following grant requests were approved:

  • Berlin Community Center – $8,000 to replace HVAC unit
  • Cullman Christian School – $12,000 for new classical curriculum
  • Jones Chapel Volunteer Fire Department – $12,000 for personal protective equipment, wildland gear and extrication suits
  • Good Samaritan Health Clinic – $12,000 for medication/supplies for uninsured
  • Harmony School – $12,000 to develop a project-based learning environment

CCCDC members are:

  • Cherrie Haney – appointed by Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman
  • Joe Golden – appointed by Rep. Randall Shedd, R-Fairview
  • Bradley Williams – appointed by Rep. Corey Harbison, R- Good Hope
  • Josh Speakman – appointed by Rep. Scott Stadthagen, R-Hartselle
  • Champ Crocker, chairman – appointed by the legislative delegation

Funding for CCCDC grants comes from taxes- Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in lieu of taxes and beer taxes. Grants are capped at $12,000 and are not issued for more than that amount except under extraordinary circumstances, which must be approved by legislators.

The CCCDC strives to maintain a $100,000 reserve fund, as advised by the legislators. Monday’s awards left the fund slightly below that amount, but the dip was pointed out and approved by the commission.
