JASPER, Ala. — A pair of Cullman County volleyball teams traveled to Curry High School Wednesday afternoon, the Good Hope Raiders and the Hanceville Bulldogs.
The Good Hope Raiders and the Hanceville Bulldogs were the first to play. The Bulldogs were eliminated by the Raiders after they swept the match 25-7, 25-8 and 25-8.
The Raiders took the first two sets against the Hanceville Bulldogs behind the strong play of Ivey Maddox, Morgan Hammock and Abbie Stripling
Going into the third set the score was tight early on as the Bulldogs fought to keep things close, but the lady Raiders were just too much for the Lady Bulldogs and they pulled away to win it 25-8 and sweep the match to advance and play Curry for the area tournament title.
The Yellow Jackets opened up an early lead in the first set and never let up. The Lady Raiders played hard but went down 25-13.
The Lady Raiders took the early lead in the next 3-0. Exciting volleys went back and forth as both teams played hard. Curry fought back to take a 10-6 lead, but Good Hope tied the score at 13 before the Yellow Jackets called timeout. The second set remained tight with the lead changing hands several times. Curry pulled ahead 24-21 before Good Hope fought back to tie things up at 24 but after it a very competitive set, it was Curry that finished on top 26-24.
The third set was dominated by Curry as the Lady Yellow Jackets downed the Lady Raiders 25-12 to complete the sweep and earn the area tournament title.
The Good Hope Lady Raiders finished as the 4A, Area 11 Tournament runners-up and will travel to play in a sub-regional tournament Saturday.
