CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. – There’s something strange happening in the woods along County Road 741 in east Cullman County. Could the woods be haunted or is it something much more sinister? For those who love a great scare, the Dead End Haunted Trail is back this year with lots of new spooks and twists that are sure to give even the bravest of souls the chills.
The Dead End Haunted Trail is located at 191 County Road 741 and is open Fridays and Saturdays through Halloween. As long as it’s not storming, a little rain will not stop the fun. The trail opens at dark and continues until the last thrill seeker has made it (or not) through the two acres of ghoulish trails.
Trail creators Angelia Selvage and John Cox started the haunted attraction in 2014, and after a brief hiatus, came back in 2017 and again in 2019. Cox explained he wanted to keep the trails fun and exciting and has hesitated to open the trails every year but chose to go ahead this year knowing people needed something fun to do with their families.
“I just didn’t want to run it into the ground,” he said. “I told my wife if I could get a whole lot of people to come, I would open it every year, but I don’t want to run it in the ground. We‘ve got different stuff going on every weekend. There’s different costumes and different scenes and all kinds of stuff going on in there.”
Even those who say they aren’t scared to go in are scared coming out, according to Cox.
“It’s in the woods and it’s fun!” he smiled “You don’t know what you’ll get into once you come through here. I don’t know what all kind of stuff. I have people dressing up until they get there. They scare me sometimes.”
Selvage and Cox said they want their trail to be a fun thing for family and friends to enjoy. The trail time varies depending on the group. Depending on the level of fear, it could take five minutes, or it could take 15 minutes. If you get lost, don’t worry. There are people there to help guide you through the woods.
Admission to the Dead End Haunted Trail is a new or gently used toy (to be given to the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office) or canned goods (in date) to help those in need during the holidays. Selvage and Cox will also take monetary donations in order to purchase toys.
