Recently, The Tribune set out to explore all of the many beautiful parks within Cullman County. We’ll visit one each week.
CULLMAN, Ala.- Cullman’s Depot Park is a nice little oasis just north of the city’s Warehouse District. Its proximity to the Festhalle has made it a popular park for community events, and during Christmas, it becomes the centerpiece of the City’s holiday festivities. This year, Depot Park will be the location for many of Oktoberfest events.
Depot Park might not have all the fancy amenities of other area parks, but it is a lovely spot to sit and chat with friends or enjoy a nice city stroll. The fountain at Depot Park is a popular place to gather and is a great photo spot for locals and visitors. In the winter, on frigid mornings, the fountain can freeze, forming its very own one-of-a-kind ice sculpture.
Depot Park is a great gathering spot for those who enjoy Pokémon Go as it is home to multiple PokéStops and Gyms. The light posts within the park are very handy as they also provide outlets for those who need to charge a phone or a laptop. There are several picnic tables and shade trees for a nice place to grab lunch. Several benches flank the central walkway of the park making it a wonderful place to sit on a nice day with a book or maybe to do a little work.
On the north end of the park are several rows of flags representing the 50 states, except Arkansas. That flag is currently missing (sorry, Razorbacks). It’s a very unique sight to see all the different flags waving and also another great photo spot.
For those who enjoy reading, the Little Free Library sits in front of the United Way of Cullman County office located next to Depot Park (just look for the giant red caboose). Leave a book and then grab a book before walking to the park.
Also, a new car charging station is located at 304 First Ave. NE next to the Park. Other nearby attractions such as the old train depot, Cullman County Museum, Festhalle, the Warehouse District and more make Depot Park a great place to visit and perhaps take a break when exploring this historic area of Cullman.
If you or someone in your family loves trains, this is the park for you. Trains are guaranteed to roll through loudly and often. It’s called Depot Park for a reason.
As for Xena, The Tribune’s Park Puppy, she loves Depot Park. The trains don’t bother her one bit. The sidewalk around Depot Park provides a great place for a walk or jog. There is beautiful, thick grass for rolling around in and many shade trees to lounge under. As always, be sure to clean up after your pets.
The park is also located next to the Cullman Police Department, so you are guaranteed to feel very safe. Depot Park is beautifully maintained by Cullman Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism. Restrooms are nearby, but are only open during scheduled Festhalle events so plan accordingly.
