GARDEN CITY, Ala. – A home invasion in Garden City in the early morning hours Monday ended with one of the suspects being shot by the homeowner. According to the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), homeowners woke up when four suspects broke into their residence.

“The suspects were met by armed homeowners and then the suspects exited the home followed by the homeowner,” said a media release from the CCSO Monday morning. “Shortly there was an exchange of gunfire with one suspect being shot and now being treated in a regional hospital.”

CCSO deputies arrived and were assisted by the Hanceville Police Department (HPD).

The CCSO said three suspects were detained, including the suspect in the hospital, and one suspect fled the area in a vehicle.

At approximately noon Monday, according to the CCSO, the Special Response Team (SRT), deputies and investigators executed a search warrant near Trimble and arrested the fourth suspect, Dustin Tuff McGraw, 21, of Vinemont. Deputies allegedly found 8 pints of promethazine with codeine, approximately 3 ounces of marijuana, a 12 gauge shotgun and drug paraphernalia.

“This is a great example of citizens utilizing their Second Amendment rights and protecting themselves and their family,” said Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry. “I have often stated that law enforcement can be minutes away when you only have seconds to defend yourself and your family. That’s why we at the sheriff’s office are proponents of not only having a weapon for self-defense, but also being proficient in how to use it.”

McGraw is charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, trafficking illegal drugs, first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Arrested at the scene Monday morning were Christopher Isaiah Johnson, 27, of Colony and Brian Austin Wright, 19, of Good Hope. Both are charged with first-degree burglary and first-degree robbery.

All three are in the Cullman County Detention Center without bond.

The fourth suspect, who was shot by the homeowner, remains hospitalized and has not been identified. Charges are pending.
