Hanceville council postpones events, hears police and fire reports

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council on Thursday evening discussed the postponements of several events, heard reports from the police and fire departments, approved a street closure for an event and set the date for a public hearing.

Fire Chief Roger Green reported that his department had 130 calls in July, and 900 so far this year. He also said the new repeater the department is getting will be housed atop the Wallace State Community College administration and that a backup generator has been installed and is tested weekly.

Police Chief Bob Long said, in the past month, his department has responded to 12 felony reports, 23 misdemeanors and four incidents. The HPD has worked six vehicle crashes, arrested 12 on warrants and four for other agencies, with 19 additional arrests. He reported a total of 35 arrests in the last month, 23 new cases, 908 Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) calls, a total call volume of 2,089 and a total of 312 reports, including tickets.  

On the recommendation of the Alcohol Review Committee, the council set a public hearing regarding alcohol sales at the DBA Quickstop Food Mart at 926 Main St. NE will be held Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m.

The budget for the fire department’s repeater was raised from $6,000 to $11,400 (from the Coronavirus Relief Fund (through the CARES Act)) to allow it to get a repeater meant for government agencies.

A request for a street closure (Bangor Avenue from the Hanceville Public Library down to Love Your Eyes) was approved for Aug. 29 from 6-9 p.m. for Arise Coffee Co.’s car show and barbecue.

The city’s annual Kids’ Night Out event has been postponed until Sept. 26, but Hanceville students will still have supplies on their desks on the first day of school.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Summer Concert Series / Hanceville Music Festival has been postponed until 2021. A special-called meeting of the Hanceville City Council to discuss the Boyd Street Sewer Project and the city’s tornado siren will take place Monday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall.
